Artist Statement

Being a vegetarian and growing up on a farm I feel very strongly on the subject of animal slaughter. Which has led me to want to express the truths of animal suffering in the food industry in subtle but nauseating way. My work features a variety of mediums from performance to painting. Currently I am creating grotesque paintings of flesh, I aim to make people feel disgust about the meat they consume. In some of my meat paintings I also combine both human and animal flesh, mixing them together so they are undistinguishable from each other. This is to show how similar we are.

Painting allows me to have a close intimate relationship with the canvas and the subject matter, it also allows me freedom to alter the imagery to make it look more disgusting. My method and subject of flesh also relate to the Grotesque and how it never fits comfortably within the boundaries of tradition. Paint after all is seen as a very traditional medium and then the vivid and gruesome meat I paint contrasts with this. This conflict and Grotesque appearance is what makes them so strange and uncomfortable to look at.
